How Long, Oh Lord?!

On May 2nd, Cyclone Nagis tore through Myanmar, leaving a horrific trail of destruction in it's wake. Eight days after the storm, the death toll is in the tens of thousands, with widespread reports that they could escalate to over 100,000 when this all settles down. The government of Myanmar has stated that it is willing to receive supplies from foreign nations, but it refuses to allow foreign relief workers into their country to help distribute those supplies. This bureaucratic nightmare is certain to give weight to the new/old concept of establishing a one-world government. All sovereign systems must be shown to fail before the "final solution" of a New World Order is not just accepted, but demanded by the masses.

That aspect aside, what's happened to Myanmar is clearly, above all other things, a great tragedy. Even though this sort of thing is supposed to happen if George Bush is the Antichrist, I'm still stunned when I hear of earthquakes, floods, tornadoes and "mega-disasters" like Cyclone Nagis. The world is experiencing a new degree of suffering at the hand of mother nature.

People are broken down, weary, or numb from all the prophetic stimulation that they are being exposed to. Despite this, most will either scoff, or accuse you of being insensitive or sensational if you point out the prophecies to them. But there is a spiritual storm brewing, and like it or not, it's becoming more difficult to deny. Clouds are looming, and something deep inside more and more people is becoming aware of it. But it's still a subconscious awareness. On the surface, at least in most of America, everything seems like business as usual.

What gives?

Mainstream Christians are too proud or ashamed to admit the terrible judgment call they made by rallying behind George Bush in the first place. Also, many of them are too sold out on the escapist, deceptive fable of a pre-tribulation rapture to face up to the true danger we all live in. The rapture paints the world as a stick of dynamite, ready to explode in the tribulation and many people in the church today are looking to light the fuse, not thinking of how wicked their behavior is.

Likewise, many people outside the church are too fed-up with the language of the Bible and the sour fruit of the modern church to listen to how these modern events were predicted eons ago.
They throw the baby Jesus out with the bathwater of a religion gone wrong.

But to those who are awake and yearning for the return of Christ, by this point, it can be very easy to wonder how much longer we're supposed to wait.

The early Christians were eagerly awaiting the return of Christ. Living under the horrible oppression of emperors like Nero, they held firm to the hope that their deliverance was very near at hand. Knowing this, the apostle Peter reminded those he wrote to in 2 Peter 3:8-10a

Beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is patient toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night
The significance of that specific formula (1000 years = 1 day) is explained very well on PeterZ's blog. It was also the reason that the book of Barnabas was rejected by the Nicaean Counsel. In Barnabas chapter 15 it reads
"The Sabbath is mentioned at the beginning of the creation: "And God made in six days the
works of His hands, and made an end on the seventh day, and rested on it,
and sanctified it." Attend, my children, to the meaning of this
expression, "He finished in six days." This implieth that the Lord will
finish all things in six thousand years, for a day is with Him a
thousand years. And He Himself testifieth, saying, "Behold, to-day
will be as a thousand years." Therefore, my children, in six days, that
is, in six thousand years, all things will be finished. "And He rested on
the seventh day." This meaneth: when His Son, coming, shall destroy
the time of the wicked man, and judge the ungodly, and change the-sun,
and the moon, and the stars, then shall He truly rest on the seventh
day."
The 21st century roughly marks the beginning of the seventh millennial "day" since the fall of man, and the third millennial "day" since the death of Jesus Christ. I don't believe there is a coincidence in that. And while it's true that Jesus said no one will know "the day or the hour" of his return, in the same teaching, he also said in the same passage that when the fig tree begins producing fruit, you will know what season it is. These signs:
  • natural disasters
  • wars
  • rumors of war
  • earthquakes in diverse places
  • famine
  • widespread disease
  • false prophets
  • false "saviors"
  • the rise of a monstrous empire that calls itself a "Christian Nation"
...all of these are signs given by Christ himself that show us what season of world history we are now living in. This millennium has begun with war and great tribulation, no doubt, but it will be defined as God's rest. These "early hours" of the "third day" since Christs' death will show his body coming to life and completely conquering the death of religious institutionalism.

Jesus warned that his return would take many by surprise. That many would "be in the darkness" and not comprehend the light. However, he also went out of his way to share specific signs of his coming return, and instructing us to be ready for it. The reason why Jesus' return will be "as a thief in the night" and people don't connect the Biblical dots these days is pride.

The greatest misconception which helps people to dismiss the Bible, and has therefore helped spiritual darkness to flourish, is the idea that people living in the modern age are born more "evolved" in mind and spirit beyond those who lived in the first society to leave a written record. This causes people to falsely conclude that we can't benefit from ancient wisdom, because we are so different (and better) now than we were then. Interestingly enough, this misconception has actually plagued and blinded the masses all throughout history (while this same wisdom has always been cherished and preserved by the ruling class). Solomon, the wisest king of Israel remarked on this self deception when he proclaimed, "There is nothing new under the sun". The trap of believing that we are "further along" than those before us is pride: a moral carelessness that reduces our capacity to respect (and therefore learn from) many lessons that have been left in history.

If you would like to point to the modern technological revolution as irrefutable evidence that we are more evolved than any generation before us, then brace yourself. The Sumerian civilization, which flourished about 5000 years ago (and is one of the first cultures in written history), left behind artifacts which clearly shows our solar system, complete with Pluto ("discovered" in 1933) and a tenth planet, unknown to modern astronomers today. This solar system is accurate in it's scale and arrangement.

If you've ever seen the movie "Stargate", or spent some time wondering how the engineering of certain ancient relics still surpasses our modern engineering capabilities, you will know that there is more to history than what meets the eye.

It must be noted that the assumption of personal superiority doesn't only apply to "secular humanists", but also to "born again" Christians who assume that the life Jesus led would sufficiently replace the need for them to live in obedience to the commands of Christ; to "pick up their cross and follow Him".

2 Timothy 3:4-5 continues to describe men who thrive in the end of days, calling them

..traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!

There is a constant moral standard which has applied to humanity all throughout history. It does not change. The wrath of God is simply the consequence of wickedness thriving unchecked. We have the freedom to change, by the decree of God, but it we refuse to repent, judgment is sure to come. Wickedness is clearly and logically defined in scripture, and no amount of religious posturing can excuse truly wicked behavior. For decades the "moral bankruptcy" of America has been highlighted in church pulpits across the country. It was that issue which has been used to unite millions of church-going republicans in an effort to take over the political sphere, which they did in 2000. However the spirit released by that focus was not one of faithful vigilance, but accusation. Sin is, in the mind of the accuser, a force which exists outside the safety of their earthly refuge. The more obsessed believers become with the forces of sin, the more they tend to justify themselves, and fall victim to the sin of personal pride. Most Right-wing "Christians" still believe that George Bush is a believer, despite the many signs that God (and Bush's own actions) have given us to the contrary. In the process of trying to create a more "Christian" nation, the love of many believers has grown cold. The gospel has been twisted, stolen, misrepresented, and darkness has come like a flood against humanity, calling itself righteousness.

Rest assured of this: the Kingdom of God is not an empire of this world system. It is something completely different. It is the light of sunrise that will defeat the darkness of our current night. and it is coming very, very soon.

Please help me understand what you mean, I posted a response HERE

Dan, I am glad to help you. First, let me say thank you for reading, secondly, let me thank you for remaining vigilant, and honest in the questions that have been raised up from your reading (in this, and other posts).

Many teachers and preachers since the 1830s have come to quote several scriptures to support the idea, but quoting scripture doesn't make something true. 2 Timothy 4:3-4 say, "The time will come when people will not listen to the true teaching, but will find many more teachers who please them by saying the things they want to hear. They will stop listening to the truth and will begin to follow false stories."

Obedience to God comes from following his word and his spirit. Remember that the devil also quoted scripture when he tempted Christ in the wilderness. And, of Course, George W Bush has quoted many scriptures and hymnals in many of his earlier speeches.

To explain the selfish and deceptive spirit of the pre-trib rapture, allow me to list a few things.

If the pre-trib rapture is true:

1) We will not be here when the Antichrist is in rule, nor during the worst period of time the world will ever see...which means that we don't need to worry about being deceived into supporting the final Antichrist. So if there will be a pre-tribulation rapture, than I and others like me are nothing more than false prophets (seeing that we cannot be in the tribulation now, because the rapture hasn't happened)

2) The Devil (and his Antichrist) will really have his work of deception cut out for him, due to the instant disappearance of millions of Christians, and the popularity of Left Behind and other works making the concept of a pre-trib rapture easy for the rest of the world to reference.

3) Somehow, despite the rapture of the saints, Lucifer will manage to deceive the whole world (because scripture says that he will). The devil will somehow convince people that everything is "business as usual". But unfortunately, no knowledgeable Christians will remain to warn the people that they're being deceived. Only brand new believers who witnessed the rapture and chose to believe because of it. God will have to supercharge their spirits almost outside of their will to make them rise up as a holy group called the "overcomers" (Rev 2-3). This will require a lot of last-minute planning and preparation from heaven(which isn't God's style).

4) The "fire" of tribulation, which is an element in the Bible that destroys wickedness and purifies righteousness will be used to destroy most on earth, while never touching those who are raptured, and purifying the 144,000 people who turn to God because they realize that the teaching of the rapture is true.

5) The believers who happen to be alive whenever the rapture happens will succeed in becoming greater than their master Jesus, who did not send 10,000 angels to deliver him from the cross, but suffered death obediently.

6) Jesus would have lied, and been misguided in his parable of the Wheat and the Tares (Matt 13, especially verses 30 and 41).

7) all other scriptures that refer to the wicked being removed, and the meek inheriting the earth (and there are plenty of them) would have gotten things backwards as well.

Jesus Prays to his father for those that God has given to him,
John 17:14-19

"I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified."

Protection from destruction by the fire: Daniel 3

Fire as a refiner, with God's protection from destruction 1 Peter 1:5-7:

"God's power protects you through your faith until salvation is shown to you at the end of time. This makes you very happy, even though now for a short time different kinds of troubles may make you sad. These troubles come to prove that your faith is pure. This purity of faith is worth more than gold, which can be proved to be pure by fire but will ruin. But the purity of your faith will bring you praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is shown to you."

Another reference to the fact that all must pass through the fire to be destroyed or purified:

"For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire."

I hope this is a good, clear, and definitive answer for you. If there are any further issues you have after this, please ask. Thank you for acting as a testing ground for my doctrine!

Kevin,

Now let me return the favor and I am glad to help you now. If you haven't yet please go to my post about hermeneutics. There is some great info about how to properly read scripture. I understand what you are saying about people quoting verses.

"but quoting scripture doesn't make something true"

I will add quoting verses is fine as long as it's in context. Look I can say "Hitler said all Jews should die" then you come along and say 'Hay everyone I heard Dan say all Jews should die.' I did say it but it was taken out of context, so basic hermeneutics helps us take scripture in context.

John 17:14-19 is interesting verses and rings true of your point to me and I completely understand but do we cross out 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 because of the verses that Jesus spoke in John? As a side note, we must keep in mind that the new covenant with mankind didn't come until after the death of Jesus and Paul is the one it was given to which started in Acts so everything said before that was still under the Old covenant and nailed to the cross. But to think that we cross out or ignore certain verses because of perceived disagreement is extremely dangerous. You still haven't addressed the meaning and purpose of 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 Scripturally. Until we do that we need to take it for what it really says. I certainly don't believe that the Bible was set up for us to read every single word literally, because of the obvious hyperboles and parables so I read, as well tell everyone to read, the Bible plainly. Words have context and meaning and the Bible is quite obvious as to what is a parable or hyperboles and just a plain instruction of salvation.

The things that you claim as evidence can be simple misunderstanding of Scripture. I don't claim to have a PhD by any stretch of the imagination, God works in many ways though as it says in 1 Corinthians 1:27 "But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;"

Lets say someone wants evidence of God. To prove God with evidence is a pointless endeavor, I must admit. Let's just say that I stump them all with powerful arguments, using archaeological and scientific evidence. I have even intellectually dwarfed them.

Now all I have to do is convince them that Noah actually built an ark and brought in the animals two by two, that Jonah was swallowed by a whale, that Samson killed a thousand men with the jawbone of an ass, that Daniel was really in the lions' den, that Moses really did divide the Red Sea, and that Adam and Eve ran around naked...and ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Do you really think I can prove all of that to anyone?

Look at what Paul said about how he persuaded men about God: "And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God." (1 Corinthians 2:1) Why didn't Paul dazzle his hearers with eloquent speeches and intellectual wisdom? Bible scholars who have studied his letters tell us that he was extremely capable intellectually. First Corinthians 2:5 tells us why he deliberately stayed away from worldly wisdom: "That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God."

If sinners are converted by the intellect (the wisdom of men), they will fall away by the intellect. If they are merely argued into the faith, they will just as easily be argued out of it whenever a respected scholar reports that 'the bones of Jesus" have been found. However if sinners are converted by "the power of God," they will be kept by the power of God. No intellectual argument will cause them to waver because they will know the life-changing reality of their conversion, and their faith will be secure in the eternally solid and secure Rock of Ages.

What my point here is that your explanation is given by your intellect. You pointed out "So if there will be a pre-tribulation rapture, than I and others like me are nothing more than false prophets" which is entirely true, the Bible says to test it to see if it is of God. We have a unique opportunity here to see if your predictions of GW come to fruition. We have just a few months to see if your point was actually truth or not. By the end of this year we both will know the truth and I thank God for that. So lets make a deal that if GW isn't the Antichrist but more of a false prophet, like I believe, then you must take what am saying to heart and read the Bible plainly and consider the Rapture.

"The Devil (and his Antichrist) will really have his work of deception cut out for him" We cannot comprehend the universe let alone the last days. Our intellect has a hard time grasping the situation. This is why I made the point about Noah and Jonah. If we try to understand the Bible by our intellect (Man's fallible wisdom) we will fail. The devil will somehow convince people that everything is "business as usual". That is correct, don't underestimate the devil, he is determined. Plus don't try to wrap your intellect around it either. Have faith in God's Word that these things will pass. Whether we believe it or not, it will happen.

Jesus would have lied, and been misguided in his parable of the Wheat and the Tares Be careful of saying Jesus is a liar because if you are wrong it was quite blasphemous against our Lord. Lets take a look at Matthew 13:30 closer. "Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn." To me there is no contradiction, these are simultaneous events; one is gathered and one is binded. It compliments 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18. Keep in mind it says to "bind them in bundles" as to gather "to burn them" meaning at a later time. I looked at different translations such as Darby and Young's literal and it never says "and burn them" meaning first burn. They are just first being gathered or counted to be burned at a later time. "gather the wheat into my barn" is a present tense command to "do it now"

Your seventh point is quite compelling and almost stumped me but remember Scripture cannot counter each other so there is a reason somewhere. There is going to be a new Jerusalem (Revelation 21:2) and what are we going to do with Revelation 21:1 "And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea exists no more." So that means the meek is inheriting the new earth.

I remember Daniel 3 where they didn't get burned and I agree but it was an isolated event. Step four in proper hermeneutics does the New Testament repeat the situation. I don't recall where Christians were placed in the furnace of fire and survived. So we take from it that if man tries to burn the saved they survive but if God burns them they will perish. Mt 13:42,Mt 13:50,Re 1:15,Re 9:2 backs that up.

Now your last reference needs to be addressed also. You pointed out 1 Corinthians 3:11-15 (in NASB and I will address that later*) but in proper hermeneutics again we must read the verses before and after it to place it in context. Look at the verses immediately following it:

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 (KJV) Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

or 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 (NKJV) "Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are."
You claim"Another reference to the fact that all must pass through the fire to be destroyed or purified:"

This is just not the case. The verses that you pointed out are clearly talking about the different foundations. The point is that if you build your foundation (put your faith) with material items you will not get rewarded and suffer loss. Contrary if you build your foundation with spiritual matters (like witnessing to the lost) then nothing can burn that and you will be rewarded. You have just taken the text "OUT" of context. Daniel 3 agrees with that.

*As far as the different translations, there is a sliding scale so I take all of them into account and not trust any 'one' thing that man has done. I stay close to literal and conservative as possible. The translations start from very conservative and literal translations like Young's Literal, Darby then to KJV then on up to the top of the more modern and liberal translations like NLT, NASB, and the most liberal New Jerusalem Bible (NJB). You might want to read a more conservative translation to understand God's Word, but that is just my advice.

Thanks for your time,
Dan

Dan. I am very tired right now, and will not take the time to rebut fully (later, though). I'm sorry that my offerings to help weren't enlightening, but proved to be mere ammunition for your response.

I will offer this: the words of Christ are the holiest of all words in the Scriptures. Jesus was the word of God; everything he said came from the Father. I do not believe that Jesus is a liar, and I do believe that twisting and dismissing the things that he has said is very dangerous.

Matthew 13:30 does not describe a simultaneous event. If it did, then Jesus would not have said "first gather the tares". Second, if it was a simultaneous event, it would describe a post-tribulation rapture, and not a pre-tribulation rapture. There is a huge difference between the two. This is a major issue, and I will take time to respond more fully, because I want to help you understand.

You need to be discerning, but also be gentle. I am very battle-weary. If you want to get fired up, then I will have to bow out. I'm sick of having arguments with people.

Matthew 13:41-43 (king James) says

"The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;

And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear."

Jesus taught us to pray, "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven". Though Jesus also told pilot that his kingdom is "not of this world", he will come down to earth to rule as the king of kings. There is a distinct difference between the "earth" and the "world". The devil rules the world currently, but he will be removed: he and all of his "Seed" will be removed. Then the meek shall finally inherit the earth (Which Jesus promised, but hasn't happened yet).

The "new heaven and new earth" come after the 1000 years of peace which we are in the opening moments of.

I am a high-school dropout. Whatever wisdom I have comes from the Holy Spirit, and from years of deep, and intense study of the scripture. This concept of being given great and "secret" wisdom from God is explained in 1 Cor chapter 2. Read it in whatever translation suits you.

I don't mean to be a jerk. I am just so tired of being attacked, and accused.

You have a good spirit, and I hope this comment I leave doesn't turn you away from the site. But you just unloaded both barrels on me, and I'd like the opportunity to say "ouch".

Anon,

Are you saying there is no rapture because man believes that it won't happen, or there is a rapture because man said so? That is your platform? Um OK then. I will read what you added but we must understand that God's Word is the authority on the matter, not man.

The Bible is a beautiful poetic book preserved for many thousands of years. I was just talking on a different blog about how in the OT there were shadowy prophecies for the NT. For example baptism:

1 Pet 3:20 "Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water."

1 Pet 3:21 "The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:"

Another example is the sacrificing of a lamb to cover the sins in the OT to the sacrificing the Lamb of God for forgiveness of sins in the NT.

My favorite is The Ten Commandments are like the ten camels that carried Abraham's servant in search of a bride for his only begotten son, Isaac (Genesis 24:10-20). When the servant arrived at the city, Nahor I believe, he had his ten camels kneel down outside the city before the well at the time the woman go out to draw water. He prayed that the bride to be would be evidenced by the fact that she would have consideration for the camels. When Rebekah saw the camels, she ran to the well to get water for them.

God, the Father, sent His Spirit to search for a bride for His only begotten Son. He has chosen the Ten Commandments to carry this special message.

The Holy Spirit knows that the primary reason the bride draws water from the well of salvation is to satisfy the ten thirsting camels of a holy and just Law. If the Law didn't demand death for sin, we wouldn't need a Savior. The true convert comes to the savior simply to satisfy the demands of a holy Law.

The espoused virgin has respect for the Commandments of God. She loves God's Law because of what it is (an expression of His holy nature) and what it does (show us our need for mercy). She isn't a worker of lawlessness.

My point is that man doesn't hasn't always known the truth in the Bible. Look Doctors/scientists used to bleed people (bloodletting) just 140 years ago, some even think that is how George Washington died. Over 3000 years ago in Leviticus 17:14 it has always said that blood is life.

But as we can see, just like the Bible, you all see a wonderful story but the reality behind it is a truth in the message and this is why we must apply principles of hermeneutics to understand the truth behind the parables. We must understand the messages the author is telling us.

Take for instance the Rich Man and Lazerath (Luke 16:19-31), most people think the rich man is just a rich dude in hell for not feeding Lazerath. Is it a picture of the way to salvation? If so, it's totally inconsistent with every other Biblical reference to deliverance from death. The symbolism the author is making is very important.

First, why did the rich man end up in hell? What was his sin? Obviously, it was his failure to feed Lazarus. If that is the case, then he could have earned salvation. If a non-Christian wanted to earn his way into Heaven, should he then give food to the homeless? How much food would merit eternal life? No since salvation is "by grace through faith,... not of works"(Ephesians 2:8-9), the rich man's sin could could not have been a mere failure to give Lazarus free food.

On the other hand, what did Lazarus do to merit salvation? Did suffering in the life appease the wrath of God and gain him entrance? If so let us seek suffering instead of the Savior.

If this is a picture of the way of salvation, then Eternal Justice can be perverted, God can be bribed, and the sacrifice of the wicked is not an abomination to the Lord.

The story , therefore, MUST have another meaning .

So who is the rich man? Let's establish several principles of Biblical interpretation that will unlock the meaning of the story.

1. Purple is the Biblical color of royalty (Esther 8:15
2. Fine linen represents the righteousness of the saints (Revelation 19:8)
3. The Church is referred to as the "royal priesthood" (1 Peter 2:9)
4. The tabernacle was made of fine linen and purple (Exodus 26:1)

I believe the rich man is a type of professing Church, and the leper (Lazarus) is a type of 'the sinner'.

The rich man's thoughts are only for himself. He is filled with his own ways. We have built for ourselves big beautiful buildings with cool clear acoustics and colorful carpets, as cozy Christians we sit on padded pews, living in luxury while sinners sink into Hell. We say that we are rich, but we are poor, blind, wretched, miserable, and naked. We have lavish luxury on the lifeboat, while mass people drown around us.

Glory is to God for giving us such a precious gift of His Word. Using hermeneutics have unlocked many things in the Bible for myself and I hope to have a better understanding of it. I wish you all the very best and hope you will understand that I don't stand above all of you looking down, but among you looking up. I wish you all the best.

Peace
